A decade ago, my journey began as a clinical pharmacist, driven by a simple yet profound goal: to help patients achieve the best health outcomes. I honed my knowledge of medications, treatment strategies, and the latest medical advancements. I counseled countless patients on proper medication usage, side-effects and what to expect while collaborating with dedicated physicians to create evidence-based treatment plans to manage their illnesses. Witnessing lives being prolonged and saved filled me with an undeniable sense of accomplishment, yet a part of me remained unfulfilled.
Over time, a disheartening pattern began to emerge. Patients returned to the hospital, year after year, each time bearing heavier burdens of illness. Medication lists grew and new diagnoses and diseases found their way onto medical records.
I knew there must be a better way, as it became evident that the healthcare system was struggling to address the root causes of their conditions. And then, I discovered: Lifestyle Medicine.
Lifestyle Medicine is a medical specialty that uses lifestyle intervention as the primary modality to treat chronic health conditions. We as clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and when used intensively, reverse such conditions.
The discovery of Lifestyle Medicine has infused my journey with renewed purpose, offering the promise of truly transformative healing and paving the way for a healthier future for my patients and those yet to join us on this path.
